Proper Care to Make Your Clothes Last Longer

Sadly, clothes don’t last forever. Even the most expensive, high-quality pieces can fade, stretch, rip, or simply wear thin over time. However, there are a few things you can do (and avoid doing!) to make them last a little longer. These 5 simple tricks will finally show your wardrobe how much you care!

Proper Care to Make Your Clothes Last Longer

1. Don’t Over-Clean

I’m giving you permission to stop washing your clothes every time you wear them (really!). Colors fade and fabrics lose their elasticity every time they’re washed which results in a very short life span. Unless an item is really dirty, follow the 5 – 3 – 1 Rule, which I heard about years ago, and still use today!

5 – 3 – 1 Rule:
Wash Every 5 Wears: Jeans, Pants, Jackets, & Bras
Wash Every 3 Wears: T-Shirts & Tank Tops
Wash Every 1 Wear: Underwear, Socks & Gym Clothes

2. Separate Whites & Colors

It only takes a few extra seconds to separate your clothes pre-wash and it makes a world of difference. If possible, do a white load (with bleach), a color load, and a black load. This will keep your blacks extra-black and your whites from being stained with leaking colors!

3. Read Labels

You know the little tag that [probably] scratches you on the inside of everything you own? It actually holds valuable information. Take note of things like “hand-wash only”, “tumble dry low”, and “wash with cold water” because not following instructions could mean ruining your new favorite item! Always consult the professionals if your item says ‘dry cleaning only’!

4. Turn Jeans Inside-Out

Washing your jeans inside out keeps them from fading and wearing thin so quickly!

5. Store Appropriately

The biggest secret to making your wardrobe last longer is simply taking care of it. Don’t leave things thrown on the floor and don’t “put them away” by stuffing them inside a drawer. Hang things up or fold them neatly and try your best to stay on top of your laundry (I know it’s tough!).
